Earlier this spring, the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) presented Schar School of Policy and Government associate professor Alan R. Shark with Chester A. Newland Presidential Citation of Merit. The recognition acknowledges Shark’s longstanding contributions to enhancing the visibility and effectiveness of technology in the public sector.

In her announcement, ASPA President Patria de Lancer Julnes reflected on the Washington, D.C.-based, 10,000-member organization’s recent achievements, emphasizing the organization's strengthened financial health, robust programming, and its forward-looking mission in a time of rapid change and uncertainty for public administration. She credited leaders including Shark for their dedication and meaningful support, which have been instrumental to ASPA’s continued progress.
The award was presented during a special celebration at the ASPA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
“I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition, not just for myself, but also as a reflection of the vital and growing role that technology leadership plays in public administration,” Shark said of the award. “I plan on continuing my ongoing quest to better integrate technology policy and leadership in public administration and policy curricula across the nation.”
Shark, who has been at George Mason University for seven years, is known for his leadership in the field of public administration and technology policy as he promotes responsible and innovative technology in the public sector. He is the executive director of the Public Technology Institute in addition to teaching Schar School courses on leadership, technology and policy, and ethics in government.
